This is beautifully written and made me wish that I had been in attendance to hear the speech. The work ahead will be difficult (when ever is it not?) but I am filled with joy for the Hungarian people and with confidence that all will be resolved.
Köszönöm a megható tanúságtételt, ahogy Magyarország a szabadság felé halad. Nem beszélek magyarul, de a "Google Fordító" nyelven igen. Ahogy Magyarország visszanyeri önbecsülését, sok sikert kívánok neki, Péter.
Is this, from Google, correct? "Thank you for the touching testimony of how Hungary is moving towards freedom. I do not speak Hungarian, but I do speak "Google Translate." As Hungary regains its self-esteem, I wish it much success, Péter."
You got it. Thanks peter. Things are moving in democracy’s direction, picking up speed. It is a pleasure to watch maga collapse under its own comtradions. May i recommend Rick Wilson’s “Death of Putin”. Imo, hopefully prescient, peter
I cannot copy my comment and the original translation somehow lost. Sorry.
Basically i said you must be joyous and proud. I dont speak hungarian but speak google translate. I wish you and Hungary the best on your new journey. I used Hungarian to honor their bravery and reborn democracy. I hope this meets your needs. With respect peter
I am in awe of this moment. Like all other great days that came before it: The inaugurations of Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy; the Speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Lincoln Memorial; the address of Nelson Mandela; the address of Vaclav Havel and most recently, the address of Charles III to the Joint Session of U. S. Congress, this day reflects the arc of history. All the Fascists who have tried, and will try again, to reverse that arc are doomed, in the end, to abject failure.
Excellent and again meticulous report. I was in front of television all day, and enjoyed every minute of it. You have relaxed after your former doubts, you have not only understood and analysed, you have converted.
Now I could say: I told you. I really did. I had to increase also the trust and optimism of my two brilliant children. You three live abroad, I live at home.
I was absolutely certain that "we shall overcome". Being present on the huge rallies on October 23, and March 15, I smelled it in the air and felt it on my skin. Reading the reactions to your post above is heart warming. Non-Hungarians used Google Translate to learn more than only have condensed English version.
To me the happiest change is that my grandchildren are proud of their Fatherland from now on.
Don't forget about our Guiness...(I have no plans to visit Dublin nowadays...)
..."watched Hungary with astonishment, even envy."
It's a unique sort of ascetic justice that the Project 2025 template has been overwhelmingly defeated by its long-suffering citizens. It will be poetic justice when the American people move us from envy to integrity frenzy.
Budapest truly did shimmer with hope today — and your words captured that profound shift from warning to promise so movingly. After years of faded expectations, seeing a prime minister speak of service, accountability, reconciliation, and belonging is powerful. Thank you for documenting this historic day with such honesty and heart. The Tisza rose, and Hungary exhaled. Wishing strength and wisdom to all as the real work begins. 🇭🇺
How inspiring, beautiful and hopeful. My favorite line is: What has happened is not the fault of the Hungarian people. I never, ever looked at Hungary and blamed its people for anything. I only hoped Orban’s grip on the country would weaken enough and thankfully it did. It is a hopeful moment to see Hungary moving towards freedom. I admit it hurts me deeply when foreigners tell us that the USA is getting what we deserve, what a horrible country we are, and it’s all our fault. Look, I understand there is a deeply disturbed cult here in MAGA. But we are a country of 340 million people and there are tens of millions of us who’ve spent the last ten years warning others about Trump and cult and how he longs to be a Fascist and he really does think he’s a king. I realize and understand all the horrible things the US government in our names, before I was born and after. We have never been a great country, but this is my home and I am devastated beyond belief at how fast they have destroyed the United States. To read that people are getting their popcorn ready as ICE just murders people on the sidewalks, is cruel. Congratulations prop,r f)
Hungary gives me hope. I can only imagine what the people are feeling. I am overjoyed for them. It will be a long and often difficult road for the new leaders…but Hungary *is* finally on that road. Again, thank you for this heartfelt essay; it is the hope for Hungary, and for those of the people who make a beautiful country worth saving and turn it into a thriving, shining example of freedom.,
Beautifully reported. I hope that your country lives up to the promise of today. If you do, you'll be an important example for Americans to follow in order to take back their country.
In awe of Hungary! I am hoping Americans will draw strength and inspiration from you!

Is there a way where I can read a translation of your comment? I simply don't want to miss even a single moment of Hungary's rebirth!

Yay hope not just for Hungary, but for democracy & compassion.

A wonderful day of celebration, honorably commemorated.
This made me cry. I am so happy for Magyarország. It helps me hope for when the US votes out its dictator.
