In a recent interview, Anne Applebaum stated that Orbán's daughter and son-in-law are in the United States now. I presume they feel protected by Trump. Does it seem likely that Orbán himself will move there, and let the chips fall where they may in Hungary?
Maybe. I’d be cautious, but if serious criminal cases start moving against him, then who knows. At that point, the question of where Orbán and his inner circle feel safest becomes much more than gossip.
It has been a taboo to even mention Hatvanpuszta during the Ancienne Régime. But such a stunning revolution has to demolish all the taboos. How the demolition will actually take place, we shall see. Since 1990, all the former ruling parties have vanished. Fidesz may follow suit.
As a magyarophile and an American, I'm reading all this closely. I care about what happens in Hungary, but I'm also looking at what Orbán does as a proxy for what Trump might do.
Orbán's kids shouldn't look to Trump for protection. He's not going to be around forever; he's nearly 80 years old, in bad health, and if nothing else he WILL leave the White House in January of 2029. The American people won't let him stay longer than that. So Orbán's kids can live here on their golden Trump visa or whatever, but if they have their eyes on anything illegal, it will come back to bite them in the backside as soon as Trump is gone..
Perhaps Hatvenpuszta will go the way of Ceaucescu's palace and become a repository or museum of cautionary tales.
Didn't Yanukovich, or the autocrat in Ukraine, have a huge palace too? Another cautionary tale.
Mezihirya, which is now a public museum.
