A deep, thought provoking article. Hungarians will now have to learn how to feel like they can breathe, that now things will change, the life they were living will be different….the walls won’t be there..💕
A most inspiring and moving post. All of the free world wishes Hungary well and those of us alarmed by the idea of losing our freedom, will take heart from this huge success.
Hungary has shown America how to start restoring what was taken from us. I will anxiously look to see how you take on the entrenched powers because we will need to do the same.
I celebrate the victory achieved by the Hungarian people. Yes, the victory belongs to them. It is their victory. Peter Magyar may be the new Prime Minister, but the victory belongs to them, the Hungarian people. However, I remind all that this victory is a beginning, a step along the path. There is much work remaining to be done. There are many challenges ahead and they are large and difficult. What is important is that the Hungarian people can now begin to work on those without the restraint of Victor Orban and his corrupt enablers. Congratulations to the Hungarian people. Now get to work on what needs to be done to deliver the better future you voted for.
Hungary is a small country with a battered history. We in America are very pleased and supportive of your success and using peaceful means to begin to restore freedom and democracy. You describe in detail all the challenges that you face to make it all work. The biggest undertaking will be learning to trust each other and living up to that trust. Can you respect differences in approaches and policies? Can you negotiate and compromise in good faith? Can you win some and lose some and still feel good about the process? That is where being a small country is an advantage. We will be watching and rooting for you.
I'm inspired and excited by this win, but I don't know very much about Hungarian politics. From the coverage over the past few years, I'd taken away a belief that Orban and his party had wired the system - that it might even be impossible to overcome the laws and corrupted administration and justice system that would harass any would-be opposition. I think there would be an audience in the US for a good, concise summary of (1) the main methods Orban adopted to try to lock in his power, and (2) why those mechanisms failed.
Wonderful writing. Am awestruck by the 77% turnout of the Hungarian people to change course so clearly by their voices and vote. So happy for your country and to how Magyar will begin to unravel the policies of Orbán. Hungary it appears may be providing a number of plans in the playbook for other countries to replicate.. one step at a time..
Really well-written and right from the heart, Peter. Thank you again for your excellent coverage. May the aftermath stay positive and hopeful, and may what's happened in Hungary send a clear and sharp message to Trump and his minions in Congress that their days in office are numbered.
You have arrived in and so many American inboxes at just the right moment. The writings of Olga Lautman about Ukraine/Russia and Viktor Kravchuk about Ukraine are also both unique. Thank you!
So happy for you and for your country. Americans will be watching to see how the new leadership unravels the policies and prosecutes the crimes of the Orban regime, we need a blueprint for when our time comes.
It will never be inevitable, that a small claque of opportunists rule totally and in perpetuity. Peter Magyar seems to be a conservative with a conscience, and will not be everyone's cup of tea. Like Barack Obama and Emmanuel Macron before him, he will annoy those further to the right and much further to the left, but he will have the best chance of dismantling the Iron Box in which Hungarian society has been encased for the last sixteen years.

A zillion blessings to all in Hungary! And congratulations on your country's vote to get rid of orban .
